The Board

Points, files, the river and the palaces.

1. Welcome! In Xiangqi the pieces stand on the points where lines cross, not inside the squares. The board has 9 files and 10 ranks.
2. The empty band across the middle is the river (楚河 汉界). Some pieces change how they move once they cross it.
3. Each side has a palace: the 3×3 points with the diagonal lines. The general and the advisors must stay inside it.
4. Each side has 16 pieces: a general, two advisors, two elephants, two horses, two chariots, two cannons and five soldiers. Red moves first.
